The virtual reality world is on the verge of a major innovation, and Meta is bringing it to market with the Quest 3. These VR goggles promise not only exciting technical improvements but also an immersive VR experience that fuses gaming and reality in a whole new way.

Price and availability

The Meta Quest 3 has been available for pre-order since 27 September and will be shipped from 10 October. Two different variants are available: one with 128 GB and one with 512 GB. For US customers, the Quest 3 costs 500 USD and 650 USD respectively. German customers will pay 549.99 euros and 699.99 euros respectively. Due to its more advanced technology, the Quest 3 is more expensive than its predecessor, which is why sales of the Quest 2 will not be discontinued for the time being.

Improvements in overview

The highest resolution display of any meta-glasses: With pancake lenses, it offers a 40% sharper image than the Quest 2.

Field of view: The field of view of the Quest 3 has an area of 110°H X 96°V, while the Quest 2 only has 96°H x 96°V.

Stepless IPD controller: This provides better viewing comfort. Overall, the IPD control has a range of 53-75 mm, which is a significant difference from the Quest 2.

Touch Plus Controller: These new controllers are more ergonomic and no longer require tracking rings. They will likely have replaceable batteries and support improved TruTouch haptics, first used in the Meta Quest Pro's Touch Pro controllers.

Charging Dock: Contacts for a charging dock can be seen in the Quest 3 teaser, providing a convenient charging option, unlike the Quest 2, which could only be charged via cable.

Resolution: The Quest 3 has a single LC display with a resolution of 2,064 x 2,208 pixels per eye - about 30% more pixels than the Quest 2.

Powerful Snapdragon chip: Developed in collaboration with Qualcomm, the next-generation Snapdragon chip promises twice the GPU performance of the previous glasses' Snapdragon XR2.

New cooling solution: An improved cooling solution contributes to an improved performance of approx. 26%-45%

Slimmer profile: The Quest 3 has a 40% thinner profile than its predecessor, which means not only a better look but also an improved wearing experience.

New sensor architecture: The two pill-shaped protrusions on the side of the headset each get a 4-megapixel RGB sensor and a tracking camera. These new RGB sensors enable color passthrough and provide 10 times higher passthrough resolution than before. The middle pill houses a depth sensor for enhanced mixed reality and automated spatial scanning, making the glasses even easier to use.

Customisable accessories: The Quest 3 is the first Meta VR headset to have accessories in different colours (black, blue and orange). Available are the Elite Strap, Silicone Facial Interface which protects the headset better from sweat, Facial Interface with Head Strap as a cheaper alternative to the Elite Strap and Active Straps for Touch Plus Controller. There is also a Charging Dock, an Elite Strap with battery and a link cable.

Spatial data collection

One of the most exciting innovations of the Meta Quest 3 is the ability to collect spatial data. This allows the glasses to recognize the layout and nature of spaces and identify and distinguish objects within them. However, to use this feature, permission must be given to each individual app.

New types of spatial data

Meta Quest 3 supports three types of spatial data:

  • Scene Data: A simplified model of the surrounding space.

  • Mesh Data: Information about the shape and structure of physical objects that enables realistic interactions between digital and physical objects.

  • Depth Data: Information on distance between objects, enabling a realistic representation of digital objects in space and obscuring them by physical objects.

The Quest 3 is the only VR goggle that supports all three types of spatial data, thanks to a new depth sensor that enables accurate mapping and spatial measurement.

More information

  • The battery life remains at approx. 2 to 3 hours.

  • Wearing prescription glasses under the VR goggles is still possible
  • The Quest 3 is fully backwards compatible, so all software from older Quest goggles will also run on the Quest 3. There are already more than 500 VR apps and games for the glasses, and Meta plans to release 50 more new apps and games that include mixed reality experiences that take advantage of the new hardware's strengths.

OpenAI's GPT-4

OpenAI has released GPT-4, a large multimodal model that can accept both image and text input and generate text output. With human-like performance on several professional and academic benchmarks, including passing a simulated bar exam with a score roughly equivalent to the top 10% of test takers, GPT-4 represents a significant breakthrough in deep learning.

Although the difference between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 may be subtle in informal conversations, GPT-4 is more reliable, creative, and able to process much more nuanced instructions than its predecessor.

To test the difference between the two models, OpenAI ran several benchmarks, including simulating exams designed for humans, where GPT-4 showed superior performance.

OpenAI also released OpenAI Evals as a framework for automated evaluation of AI model performance as open-source software to allow anyone to report deficiencies in their models and guide further improvements.

GPT-4's text input capability will be available through ChatGPT and the API (waiting list), while the image input capability is currently being tested with partner 'Be My Eyes' (https://www.bemyeyes.com/).

For more information, see the research paper https://lnkd.in/dgYXBPFq or the GPT-4 website (openai.com).

We are excited to see how GPT-4 will help drive various industries and transform the field of natural language processing in the near future. With its massive parameter increase and ability to improve language understanding and reasoning skills, we eagerly await the breakthroughs that GPT-4 will enable!

Advantages of the Meta Quest 3 MR-Headset

Since its founding in 2012, Oculus VR Inc. has revolutionized mixed reality technology and has been steadily bringing new and innovative products to market ever since. Just recently, the first information about model “Meta Quest 3” was leaked.

What is the Meta Quest 3 VR headset?

Meta Quest 3 is a standalone VR headset that can be operated without a computer or console. It is expected to feature 2K resolution per eye, 120 Hz refresh rate, and 110-degree field of view. Possibly, it will come with touch controllers that will allow intuitive control.

The new VR goggles are said to be the successor to the Meta Quest 2. However, it is said to be twice as thin and twice as light as the previous model. The Quest 3, like the Meta Quest Pro, is said to offer a better mixed reality experience.

New features and improvements

The Meta Quest 3 is expected to bring many new features and improvements. Mixed Reality via passthrough camera is said to be one of the biggest new features. For this, there are almost twice as many sensors on the front of the VR goggles as on the Meta Quest Pro. These are said to be a depth camera, two black-and-white cameras and two RGB cameras. Meta has reportedly already developed 41 new apps in the backhand, including mixed reality experience, for the new headset.

In addition, the Meta Quest 3’s improved body is thinner and smaller than the Meta Quest 2’s, indicating that the new VR headset may use the Meta Quest Pro model’s pancake lenses. If the Meta Quest 3 uses the same lenses as the premium headset, it is expected to offer a much sharper image than the Meta Quest 2. It is also expected that the Meta Quest 3 may once again rely on a simple fabric strap for the head mount to save costs and offer a more stable and comfortable head mount accessory.

Furthermore, it is speculated that Meta’s new headset might have a new Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip installed. This would mean a performance increase of two times compared to the Quest 2.

The possible new software and improved MR experience are expected to be the selling points for the Quest 3. These new features will presumably also justify the new, higher price compared to the previous model. This is estimated to be between 300 and 500 US dollars.

Launch

The Meta Quest 3 could go on sale in the fall of 2023 with its presentation at Meta Connect. Meta’s next VR headset should also be released in 2024. It is apparently codenamed “Ventura” and is supposed to offer the best possible performance at the most attractive price.

Conclusion

The Meta Quest 3 VR headset is expected to offer many new features and improvements. In particular, the possible hardware feature through the sensors on the front of the VR headset can make an important contribution to the development of VR technology. Also, user can look forward to the better performance of the VR goggles. In our eyes, the Meta Quest 3 has enormous potential to become an important device in the VR industry!

We are excited and will test the Meta Quest 3 as soon as the VR headset is available!

Maximizing the Design and Promotional Appeal of Virtual Offices in the Metaverse

An increasing number of companies are rushing into the metaverse to establish a brand presence or an office, though many have failed to establish a clear strategy for exploiting the medium, and have had a tendency of simply replicating their physical offices in the metaverse. Christian Glessner, CEO of Hololux, a virtual reality and mixed reality agency, cautions against “simply copying real properties and conventional physical design styles” in the metaverse.

Gamification and brand play can play key roles in metaverse offices and showrooms, especially in terms of enhancing user engagement. Christian believes gamification is “very helpful in improving the experience and engaging customers. “ He feels that gamification can also be effective in the metaverse for promoting companies “with less exciting products, like banks and insurance companies.” Hololux’s successful use of gamification in metaverse offices and events for two financial clients illustrates this point, and is credited by those clients in these statements:

JP Morgan has been one of the strongest proponents for virtual offices in Decentraland. The bank incorporated its Onyx lounge in Metajuku, a virtual replica of Tokyo’s shopping mall, in Decentraland. The first floor of that lounge features a wandering tiger and a picture of the bank’s CEO Jamie Dimon.  On the second floor, visitors have an opportunity to witness a discussion of experts on crypto through their avatar.  JP Morgan sees great opportunities for generating significant revenue from virtual real estate ownership financed through decentralized autonomous organizations (DAO) like Decentraland and opportunities for attracting a new workforce.

Building an office in the metaverse requires considerable experimentation, as “every platform has different limitations and advantages,” according to Christian. Hololux built an office in Decentraland with its partner Azury, a real estate firm, to “show customers how to successfully promote their brands, products, and services in the metaverse,” and greatly expand their exposure, explains Christian. According to him, offices and shops in Decentraland could well become the “Fifth Avenue stores or offices of the future, with potentially millions of customers and clients drawn to their virtual office or shop.” In addition, Hololux’s office in Decentraland “allows us to attract new customers and employees, Christian pointed out.
